Why trust my opinion?
I am an illustrator & writer and teach a certificate class on Illustration for Picture Books at the Emily Carr Institute of Art & Design, which consists of 3 levels: Level I ‘Illustration for Picture Books’, Level II ‘Writing and Illustrating the Dummy Book’ and Level III ‘Portfolio & Independent Projects’. I have experience teaching the subject in a classroom setting as well as on a one-on-one basis.
I have two published Children's Picture Books of my own, 'The Day it all blew Away', which got nominated for the Christie Harrison Award in 2008 and my newer book, 'Paulina P. for Petersen'.
I am a member of the Children’s Writers & Illustrators of British Columbia Society as well as the Writers Union of Canada for which I have reviewed various story submission for their annual ‘Writing for Children’ competition.
I also run 'I heart Picture Books', a blog on the topic of picture books, illustration and artists in the field.
Creating a good story is one of the most exciting and fulfilling things you can do in your life. I believe that every one has a great story inside of them, sometimes it just takes a bit of help to pull it out.
If you’re interested in creating a Picture Book but don’t really know where to start, I recommend taking my level 1 class at Emily Carr. Check here to see when the next class starts.
